Six

Cheers broke through the screams, broke through the cries and panic and agony that was ripping through me. Everything hurt, my spine felt as though it was being ripped out of my tail, my lungs burned, my skin screaming as the cool air hit it. Moonlight fell over everything, painting the world in dark blues that echoed the agony that was everywhere.

Instead of the celebration I had expected, I found myself sobbing, dragging my useless legs after me as I tried to get back to Kai. Back to the cold water so far away I already knew I wouldn't make it. If only because everything was so heavy here, the air was heavy, my body was heavy.

With the pain of the change, and without the fluid bliss of the water, every movement was a challenge. I still had to try.

"What are you doing?" Someone hissed in my ear, wet hands wrapping around my forearms as they pulled me back against a chest so perfectly defined that I could have sworn Kai was here. My heart calmed and I was about to lean into him, and then he spoke again. "I would hate for my mother to have to make good on her promise so early."

Oh, my gods. No.

I pulled away, the cheers around us fading into confusion as an enormous man in a tailored grey suit and a mustache to match began to make his way over, shuffling around the water in an attempt to keep his shoes dry. I could see Hywel just steps behind him, clasping his hands and bouncing on his toes eagerly. But they were all like the bubbles of a manatees fart. Inconsequential.

I was frozen, dread and confusion multiplying as I stared at the now human man before me. The Siren was gone.

The sallow skin, pointed teeth, and webbed hands. All of it. It was gone.

He was gone, and I had no idea who the hell sat on the rock beside me.

Caspian smiled with a grin that on that face was downright handsome. Olive skin covered a body so muscular that I couldn't figure out where he had hidden it on the spindly Siren body. His eyes were no longer slits of yellow, but orbs dark as onyx. His teeth were white and straight, the wide grin emphasizing a jaw that was cut about as perfectly as his chest. The guy had been birthed from Amphitrite and wrapped in clouds.

“What--?” I tried to ask, but the burn in my lungs too much, the newfound oxygen still acquainting with my body to get out more than that.

"Stop staring, princess, and wipe that shit out of your eyes before they know something is wrong," he snarled, just as the wide man reached us. Well, at least the bastard sounded the same.

"Welcome!" The man said, his voice hesitant as he reached us, his eyes scanning over the rock and sea as though he had lost something. "Where is everyone else?"

"Everyone else?" I asked as innocently as I could, any ease of tension I had found shoving itself right back into my shoulders.
